Washington: The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 7.79 cr, while the deaths have surged to more than 17 lakh, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

In its latest update on Wednesday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 7,79,58,369 and 17,15,945 respectively.

The US is the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 18,217,390 and 3,22,589, respectively, according to the CSSE.

India comes in second place in terms of cases at 1,00,75,116, while the country's death toll soared to 1,46,111.

The other countries with more than a 10 lakh confirmed cases are Brazil (73,18,821), Russia (28,78,382), France (25,47,577), the UK (21,16,608), Turkey (20,62,960), Italy (19,77,370), Spain (18,29,903), Argentina (15,55,279), Germany (15,56,708), Colombia (15,30,593), Mexico (13,38,426), Poland (12,14,525) and Iran (11,70,743), the CSSE figures showed.

Brazil currently accounts for the second highest number of fatalities at 1,88,259.

The countries with a death toll above 20,000 are Mexico (1,19,495), Italy (69,842), the UK (68,409), France (61,821), Iran (54,003), Russia (51,274), Spain (49,520), Argentina (42,254), Colombia (40,931), Peru (37,173), Germany (27,590), Poland (25,783), South Africa (25,246) and Indonesia (20,257).
